“I Am Happiest in the Storm”
When the vitriol does not subside even at her coffin, when “Rest in Peace” is replaced by the curse “may your ashes be blown away by the wind!”, then we know – in the words of Carl von Ossietzky – that no average person has died, but rather that an extraordinary life has ended.
German officers murdered Rosa Luxemburg 100 years ago. Even today, the Polish socialist remains a symbol of the struggle against all kinds of oppression whether of economic, political, or gendered nature. In Berlin’s Kunstquartier Bethanien we celebrated a woman whose name everyone in Germany knows, but about whose life and work almost only legends are told.
